GoTriangle prioritizes safety through STAR program

Since 2013, GoTriangle has been a proud participant in the North Carolina Department of Labor's Carolina STAR Program, a rigorous program that recognizes organizations that go above and beyond to prioritize workplace safety.

The Safety Committee regularly completes a safety risk management process to spot trends, address hazards, and put solutions in place. Supervisors use bus camera footage to coach operators and reinforce safe practices, while employees participate in refresher training on hazard awareness, emergency response, and safety policies. Supervisors also complete OSHA 10-Hour General Industry training to strengthen leadership in safety. Initiatives like the STAR Card on each employee badge and daily safety radio messages by Steven Hennigan, Transit Service Supervisor, keep safety top of mind for everyone, every day.

With the support and leadership of new President and CEO Dr. Brian Smith, safety continues to be a regular point of discussion in meetings and a central part of GoTriangle’s purpose.

“At GoTriangle, safety is viewed as everyone’s responsibility, with employees and management working together to create a culture of proactive hazard prevention,” said Jimmy Price, Director of Safety and Security.

Each year, GoTriangle continues to educate its employees on safety initiatives by participating in the annual Carolina STAR Conference in Greensboro, NC. The following employees attended the event in September:

  • Donyasha (Tasha) Hargrove, Transit Ambassador and Outreach Specialist

  • Terence Miller, Safety and Compliance Coordinator

  • Juan Alencastro, Regional Information Center Supervisor

  • Valerie Rodriguez, Reservationist

  • LaVontae Wilson, Customer Information Specialist

  • Jimmy Price, Director of Safety and Security

At the conference, employees have the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions on topics like burnout and mental health.

Every five years, GoTriangle completes the STAR recertification process to maintain its recognition for safety excellence. The two-day evaluation includes employee interviews, data review, and facility tours to assess safety programs, training, and risk management practices. The last recertification was in 2021, with the next scheduled for 2026, ensuring safety remains a top priority across the organization.
