Make a difference while you’re making a living

No matter where you live, mobility is the key that opens the door of opportunity. If you can’t get there, you can’t work there, learn there or get medical care there.

As the regional transportation provider in North Carolina’s Research Triangle area, GoTriangle is proud that our mission means expanding possibilities for our neighbors while also combatting the traffic congestion that threatens our quality of life.

Whether GoTriangle team members are operating a bus, planning the routes, working on carburetors or computers or getting the word out about all of the benefits of transit, each person plays a critical role in how well we serve our community.

New employees would be joining an agency that offers a wide variety of fixed route, paratransit and vanpool services to the Triangle’s three counties. We serve Apex, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Garner, the RDU International Airport, RTP and Raleigh.

CDL drivers must never use narcotics or drugs, or abuse alcoholic beverages.
  1. Do I need to possess a CDL (Commercial Driver License) to become a Transit Operator?
No. Traditionally, those wanting to become public transit drivers first had to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License. On March 7, 2022, GoTriangle, began offering a new extended training program (View the Non-CDL Bus Operator Program FAQs below) that allows people with regular driver’s license to start training for a CDL as long as they meet qualifications. Those accepted into the new program are hired as GoTriangle employees with full benefits from Day 1.
  2. How can I obtain a CDL Permit?
To obtain a CDL permit, you must pass three written tests: a general knowledge test, an air brakes test and a passenger test. Tests are administered by the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles at all Driver’s License Offices. (Offices are open Monday through Friday.) We encourage applicants seeking a CDL to get a copy of the CDL manual to study before taking the written tests. For your convenience, the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s Manual is available online at ncdot.gov. In addition, you may pick up a manual from any Driver’s License Office.
  3. Do I need to submit a copy of my CDL and other documentation when I apply?
No. Should you be selected to move forward in the hiring process, you will be contacted and provided instructions on how to submit additional documents.
  4. Are there physical requirements for being a Transit Operator?
To safely operate a commercial motor vehicle, you must be in good physical condition. A North Carolina Department of Transportation medical card is required to obtain a CDL for driving a transit bus. All commercial motor vehicle operators must be able-bodied and strong enough to drive their vehicles with ease. Individuals with chronic diseases such as heart trouble, seizure disorders, high or low blood pressure, fainting or dizzy spells, diabetes or any other physical or mental disability that could reduce driver control may not meet DOT requirements. GoTriangle requires a pre-employment functional assessment test for all drivers and operators.
  5. Does GoTriangle provide CDL training?
Yes. As part of the regular training program, trainees who begin employment with a CDL permit will receive in-house training and testing required to obtain a CDL. In addition, GoTriangle offers a new extended training program that allows people with regular driver’s license to start training for a CDL as long as they meet qualifications. After six months of employment, Transit Operators may be reimbursed for the expense of obtaining a Class B CDL with a Passenger Endorsement. For details on the new extended training program for those with regular driver’s license to train for a CDL, View the Non-CDL Transit Operator Program FAQs below.
  6. Will having points on my license disqualify me?
Applicants with more than two points will be disqualified automatically. Applicants with two or fewer points may still be considered for employment based upon a clean overall driving history and the year of most recent violation.
  7. How much can I expect to earn while in training?
You will receive the base pay rate of $19 an hour and more if you have direct experience.
  8. Once I complete training, will the hourly rate change?
No. Your starting pay rate will be $19 an hour. After your initial year of working, rates will increase when the employee has an annual performance review. Bus Operators also have the opportunity to earn annual safety and customer service bonuses of up to $2,000.
  9. What is the maximum hourly rate I can expect to earn as a Transit Operator?Transit operators new to the agency start at $19/hour with a 3-year guaranteed pay increase. Year 1 rate $20.38/Year 2 rate $20.93/Year 3 rate $24.61. Starting in Year 4 all increases will be based on merit. Each year transit operators also have the opportunity to earn safety and customer service bonuses of up to $2,000.
  10. How long is the training program?
The paid training program lasts 60 to 90 days and includes a combination of classroom, in-vehicle, route and in-service training. A training day is typically eight to 10 hours long. Candidates accepted into the training program should be prepared to be available for training during all GoTriangle operating hours. Trainees must attend all scheduled training classes.
  11. What hours would I work as a Transit Operator with GoTriangle?
GoTriangle’s service hours are from 4:55 a.m. to midnight Monday through Friday, from 5:55 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays and from 5:55 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays. New driver training opportunity at GoTriangle
Are you looking for a new career? You now have an opportunity to enter the public transit industry through a new program GoTriangle has developed.

Traditionally, those wanting to become public transit drivers first had to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License. GoTriangle’s new program allows people with regular driver’s license to start training for a CDL as long as they meet qualifications. Those accepted into the new program are hired as GoTriangle employees with full benefits from Day 1.

How does the program work?

If you are hired for the new program, you will start your transit career by driving passengers on smaller vehicles that do not require a Commercial Driver’s License. GoTriangle expects that you will obtain your CDL learner’s permit and license within 60 to 90 days after starting the program. Once you obtain your CDL learner’s permit through the NC Department of Motor Vehicles, GoTriangle will train you on our larger vehicles/buses and provide training and official testing for your CDL. After successfully completing that training program and passing the CDL test, you can go to DMV to purchase your CDL license.

Why did GoTriangle begin this new way of hiring?

During the COVID-19 pandemic – like transit agencies across the nation – GoTriangle has been experiencing a shortage of workers that has required us to suspend or to modify temporarily some of our bus routes. This program allows us to resume our public service on some routes and offers a new pathway to a bus operator career to people who do not yet have a CDL license.

What is hiring process like from the start?

You can apply to the program at gotriangle.applicantpool.com/jobs/. GoTriangle selects qualified applicants for a first interview. We ask those we choose for a second interview for permission to do background and driving history checks. Those who pass the second interview and subsequent tests, including drug screening, will receive an employment offer letter. We will also propose a start date, which is generally in one to four weeks depending on the start of our next training class.

After being hired, what happens from Day 1, including what is involved in training for non-CDL driving?

GoTriangle provides new employees with an orientation session and our ID badges. They begin training to drive small vehicles on specific bus routes and transition into driving those vehicles on their own. During their training, new employees will be required to study for and schedule an appointment on their own to obtain their CDL learner’s permit test with the DMV. Study materials for obtaining a CDL learners permit are available at DMV.

After gaining a CDL learner’s permit, what is involved in the GoTriangle training process?
You will spend about six more weeks learning all of the bus routes and procedures associated with providing excellent customer service. You also will learn the skills necessary to pass your CDL road test.

What does the CDL skills training look like?

Once you gain a CDL learner’s permit, you go through a bus orientation and learn how to maneuver vehicles through a closed-course. You become familiar with using bus mirrors and reference points, making turns, positioning vehicles in lanes and knowing when to stop. You learn how to do required pre- and post-trip bus inspections and are trained in basic control skills. GoTriangle prepares you to take the CDL road test and administers the test. Once you pass the CDL road test, you can go to the DMV to purchase your CDL license.

Will I receive full pay and benefits?

Employees in this program begin work on Day 1 at our starting pay of $19 an hour with full benefits, including health and vacation.

What is the timeframe from starting on Day 1 to becoming a certified CDL driver?

The time frame is expected to be about 60 to 90 days depending on when you obtain learner’s permit and are scheduled for the larger vehicle/bus training.
