Identity through Infrastructure
In January and February of 2018, more than 200 community members participated in design workshops to help define themes for the architectural design of the light rail.
Their work began with three questions:
- What do we want to celebrate about Durham and Orange counties’ past?
- What do we love about living here today?
- What do we want to be able to celebrate in the future?
Out of the answers, three common themes emerged. People valued the area’s cultural diversity, took pride in its long history of research and innovation and felt inspired and enriched by its natural heritage.
The project team’s architects studied the input from the workshops, and they examined the ideas shared through the online meeting. Using the input as inspiration and guidance, they created combinations of patterns, colors and materials to use in the real-life light-rail station they were responsible for designing.
