gotriangle meetingGoTriangle will host a light-rail project open house Saturday, Jan. 26, from 9 to 11 a.m. to share preliminary information and answer questions about the recently proposed changes that affected downtown Durham. The open house will be located at 201 E. Main Street, Durham, Admin II Building, Rooms 126 A & B.

In December, GoTriangle submitted a new proposal for taking Durham and Orange counties’ light-rail project through downtown Durham to the Federal Transit Administration for its evaluation. This proposal includes building a tunnel to take a portion of the light-rail line through downtown Durham underground, which would keep Blackwell Street open and eliminate interaction among the railroads, car traffic and the light rail at street crossings in the corridor.

A new proposal became necessary when Norfolk Southern expressed concerns regarding railroad operations and after stakeholders expressed concerns over closing a section of Blackwell Street to vehicles.

Project team members first presented the tunnel option to a group of downtown Durham stakeholders Dec. 13.
