Some of America’s newest companies are getting their start in Durham. It’s happening downtown at American Underground on the American Tobacco campus.
Launched in 2010 with over one million square feet of space, the American Underground has expanded to three locations in downtown Durham and one in Raleigh. By tapping into imagination and the Silicon Valley vibe, American Underground is now home to 250 startups and nearly 1,000 entrepreneurs innovators and investors specializing in digital products, technology and healthcare.
Justin Laidlaw is the Communications and Media Director at Runaway Clothes, located at American Underground @Main, featuring apparel for men, women and kids. He's been riding the bus for 7 years and often rides GoDurham Route 5 or 5k to his office in American Underground, which Justin loves for its collaborative environment.
Justin says his morning bus ride is a great time to "catch up on morning news, check social media, and even get some work done." He's recently discovered the TransLoc app, which allows him to know when the next bus is coming. He gets a notification when his bus is five to ten minutes away.
American Underground has been a community leader in alternative transportation, including providing transit GoPasses and expanded bike parking. Molly Demarest, the Senior Director of Operations and Finance at American Underground, says having options is a plus. "When we think about building a diverse ecosystem, having transit options so all community members can access a job is really important." Demarest continues, "This is a community that is willing to play its part so that the whole Triangle community can grow together."
