Beginning August 4, GoTriangle will offer for the first time in the transit agency’s history bus service in 15-minute intervals along Routes 400 and 405 in Durham and Orange counties.
GoTriangle regularly reviews its routes and services; however, these upgrades are a priority for both the Durham Transit Plan and the Orange Transit Plan and were made possible by the funding from half-cent sales taxes directed toward transit improvements.
“We are constantly looking at ways to add service and reduce wait times for riders and ensure more on-time arrivals. In addition, we actively seek input from the rider community to help us shape our routes,” said Jay Heikes, Transit Service Planning Manager at GoTriangle. “These changes and upgrades reflect that input, and we are so excited to be able to offer 15-minute service between Durham and Chapel Hill on Routes 400 and 405.”
Added Heikes: “This is a transformative step toward high-quality and high-frequency transit in the Triangle.”
Buses will run every 15 minutes between Downtown Chapel Hill, Patterson Place, South Square, Duke and VA Medical Centers, and Downtown Durham on weekdays from 5:45 a.m. until 7 p.m., every 30 minutes on weekdays from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. and on weekends from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m., and every 60 minutes from 9 p.m. to midnight on weekdays, from 7 p.m. to midnight on Saturdays and 7 p.m. to 11p.m. on Sundays. These changes will provide more service and reduce wait times, improving connections to local transit and improving access among Chapel Hill, Durham and points in-between.
Route 400 will be realigned to serve South Square on all trips. To make frequent service possible, Route 400 will no longer operate on Southwest Durham Drive, Old Chapel Hill Road and University Drive south of Dr. MLK Jr. Parkway during weekday mornings and afternoons. GoDurham Route 10 will continue to serve stops along University Drive every 30 minutes all day.
Route 405 will be extended to serve Jones Ferry Park-and-Ride and realigned to serve Patterson Place and South Square on all trips. It will provide peak direction service every 30 minutes from Carrboro to Durham on weekday mornings and from Durham to Carrboro on weekday afternoons. Trips to and from UNC Hospitals will be served by Route 400. Route 405 and 400 will share the same alignment between Downtown Chapel Hill and Durham to ensure reliable operation of service every 15 minutes.
To accommodate these route changes, several stops along Route 400 were removed. Please visit gotriangle.org/service-changes to view stops impacted.
