Research Triangle Park, NC (Nov. 4, 2019) – The Regional Transit Center was closed for several hours Monday after a GoTriangle passenger alerted Durham police and GoTriangle employees that he had seen another passenger leave a large bag by a trashcan on the platform and run.

Out of an abundance of caution, authorities evacuated GoTriangle’s nearby offices and moved all bus operations out of the Regional Transit Center for about four hours as law enforcement officers investigated. Authorities determined there was no threat to safety and gave the all-clear for normal operations to resume just before 12:30 p.m.

After the alert came in about 8 a.m., GoTriangle’s transit operations team immediately began rerouting buses and instituting a new staging area on Slater Road, eventually moving bus operations to the SpringHill Suites by Marriott parking lot.

GoTriangle also used its emergency alert system to evacuate its offices in the Plaza Building next to the RTC.

“The Durham Police Department, Fire Department and other first-responders did an outstanding job keeping everyone safe, and we cannot thank them enough,” says Shelley Blake Curran, GoTriangle’s interim CEO and president. “Our operations team members also deserve high praise for how quickly they jumped into action to keep our passengers safe, the agency informed and our buses moving.”
