Wake County Commissioners unanimously approved sending a recommended transit plan to voters this fall.
Wake County and CAMPO introduced the plan that will strengthen regional connections across county lines; connect Wake County communities to a more robust transit network; and provide frequent, reliable service to education, healthcare and employment centers.
“We are pleased to join our partners in support of the Wake County Transit Plan which will provide significantly improved transit options, help reduce congestion, and provide new opportunities for jobs and economic growth,” said Jeff Mann, General Manager of GoTriangle.
The recommended transit plan will add more frequent bus service, cover larger areas and span longer hours. It will be complemented by rapid bus service along major corridors and commuter rail linking Garner, Raleigh, N.C. State University, Cary, Morrisville, the Research Triangle Park and Durham.
Today’s vote by Wake Commissioners follows unanimous votes by the GoTriangle Board of Trustees and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO). Voters will now see a referendum for a one-half cent sales tax to fund transit improvements on the ballot on November 8th.
Wake County’s Transit Strategy is a partnership that includes Wake County, GoTriangle, CAMPO, the City of Raleigh, the Town of Cary, the Research Triangle Foundation, NC State University and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.
