Durham and Orange County Boards of Commissioners cast final votes to discontinue light rail

Research Triangle Park, NC (April 9, 2019) – Following the votes of the GoTriangle Board of Trustees on March 27 and the Orange County Board of Commissioners on April 2, the Durham County Board of Commissioners voted Monday to discontinue Durham and Orange counties’ light-rail project, effectively ending the project.

Local leaders, with input from community members, now will identify, develop and implement new transit plans that use the investment from the half-cent transit-designated sales tax that voters in each county approved.

Research Triangle Park, NC (March 27, 2019) – The GoTriangle Board of Trustees voted unanimously today to recommend that the cost-sharing partners in Durham and Orange counties and the Durham - Chapel Hill - Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization discontinue the light-rail project.

The Durham County commissioners have voted unanimously to use two county-owned lots on East Main Street near the planned Dillard Street light-rail stop in Durham as sites for development that includes both affordable and market-rate apartments.

The intention is to build approximately 437 residential units and to make 277 of them affordable to households earning 30 to 80 percent of the area median income. The plans for the two properties also include nearly 35,000 square feet of commercial space and up to 1,900 parking spaces.
